Family Counseling
Who Family Counseling Helps
Family counseling isn't only for families in crisis. It can help when:
Communication keeps breaking down, or conflict feels constant
A child or teen is struggling with behavior, anxiety, mood or school
Parents disagree about discipline, boundaries or expectations
Your family is adjusting to divorce, remarriage, a move or a new baby
A loved one is facing illness, dementia or other health challenges, and caregiving is straining everyone
You're grieving a loss together
Adult children and parents want to repair or reshape their relationship
Families come in every shape. We welcome parents, stepparents, grandparents, caregivers, siblings and chosen family. Our therapy serves ages 3 and up, so even young children can be part of the process.
Family Life Can Be Full Of Love And Still Be Hard.
Tension at home, a child who is struggling, a major change, or a loved one's illness can leave everyone feeling stretched thin.
At Journeys Therapy Center, we offer family counseling in Bartonville, Texas, and by telehealth across the state, to help your family understand one another and find a steadier way forward.
How We Work With Families
We start from a simple belief: the problem is rarely one person. Instead of labeling a "difficult" child or a "difficult" parent, we look at how your family communicates, how roles have formed, and what each person needs.
We don't take sides, assign blame or hand your family a script. We help you:
Understand the patterns that keep repeating at home
Talk and listen in ways that everyone can hear
Set clear, fair boundaries that fit your family
Support a struggling child while strengthening the whole household
Handle stress, change and conflict as a team
Rebuild trust, warmth and connection
For younger children, we may use play and age-appropriate activities so that kids can express what they can't yet put into words.
What Family Sessions Look Like
Start with a call. Reach out for a free consultation. Tell us who's in your family, what's been happening and what you're hoping for. We'll help you decide who should attend and match you with a therapist.
Getting everyone heard. Early sessions focus on listening to each person's view, including children, in a way that feels safe and respectful. Sessions run about 50 minutes.
Practical tools for home. You'll practice new ways of communicating and handling hard moments, with simple steps to try between sessions.
Flexible formats. Depending on your family's needs, sessions may include the whole family, parents only, or a child or teen individually. In-person sessions are in our Bartonville office, and telehealth is available when everyone is in Texas.
Family Counseling FAQs
Does everyone in the family have to attend?
Not always. Many families start with the people who are most affected and add others later. Your therapist can help you decide what makes sense.
What if my child doesn't want to come?
That's common. A good therapist helps kids feel comfortable, and sometimes starts with parents or one-on-one time. The free consultation is a good place to talk through your concerns.
Is family counseling only for children with problems?
No. Many families come to improve communication, prepare for a change or support one another through a hard season.
Will the therapist take sides?
No. Our role is to help everyone feel understood and to support the family as a whole.
Do you accept insurance, and do you offer telehealth?
Some of our clinicians are in network with plans including Aetna, Baylor Scott & White, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna. Curative, Evernorth, Medicare and UnitedHealthcare. Our office will verify your benefits and give you an estimated cost. Telehealth sessions are available when both you and your therapist are in Texas.
